Performance FAQ
Don’t know what to expect from a bellydance performance? Aren’t sure what’s acceptable? Here are some answers to common questions about Kisaya’s performances!
How can I prepare for bellydance at my event?
Though Kisaya will arrive on location in costume, she will require a private area for last minute touch ups and preparations. There should be a clear area for dancing with plenty of room to maneuver. Many dancers enjoy dancing in the audience, between tables and chairs, but there should be at least one location cleared for free movement. Some props may not be available for use in smaller and more confined areas. Kisaya may also ask that any open flame near the dance area be extinguished or relocated as it could be a fire risk or may otherwise restrict her performance ability. Fire fusion shows require additional preparation listed below.
What can be expected of a typical tribal performance?
A typical tribal fusion performance begins with a dramatic entrance to slow music. This is often followed by an upbeat song and the encouragement for audience participation. After this follows a veil routine or balancing to slow music suited to the dramatic dance. Finally, things are wrapped up with a high energy song where the audience is encouraged to get up and dance!
Gypsy fusion performances begin with a song that begins slow and builds in energy to a wild fury. Often a shawl or veil is used early in the set to be cast aside as the rhythm increases. Things slow down for the next piece, a slow and dramatic dance piece to traditional music, sometimes including floorwork as the venue permits. This is followed by fast, energetic skirt dance, embracing the fire of the Gypsy spirit! The final song is a lively piece for audience participation.
What about audience participation?
Kisaya encourages the audience to participate through clapping along, zaghareeting (a high pitched trilling with the tongue), or getting up to dance (typically after being invited by the dancer). Special moments can be arranged for a guest (or guests) of honor, such as bringing the guest out to dance or presenting them with a gift.
Can I tip the dancer?
Many cultures encouraging the tipping of bellydancers. Though some dancers do not accept tips to the costume, Kisaya will accept tips tucked at the shoulder or in the belt at the hip. She also accepts tips to her basket, even while she’s balancing it! Showering the dancer with bills or handing her the tips after the show are also appropriate and preferred by some dancers.
Can I take pictures/video of the performance?
Photos and video are the perfect way to remember your party, and Kisaya would love to be a part of those memories! Take as many photos or videos as you would like! Feel free to send Kisaya copies of any photos or video. She would love to see them! No photos or video of Kisaya may be taken and sold for profit.
My event is in a public place. Will Kisaya still be able to perform?
Public locations are fine for performances, but Kisaya will not be responsible for any permits or permissions required. That is your responsibility. If the venue refuses to allow Kisaya to perform the full cost of the performance will still be charged for reserving the date and preparation time.
What about fire fusion?
Fire fusion requires additional preparation and arrangement. It is your responsibility to arrange for any fire permits required at the location, which can usually be done through the fire marshal. These are typically only required for clubs and private places. An outdoor area at least 15ft in diameter is required for fire performances for audience safety. An area for the fuel station must be available a safe distance from the performance area. A source of water must be easily available so the fire safety assistant may set up. If this is not possible, candle dance is an alternative for indoor venues or smaller location as fire safety restrictions are greatly reduced.
Can I provide my own music?
No, but Kisaya will be happy to work with you on her music selections for your event. She is more than happy to take special requests. Though few of her performance pieces are choreographed, she always dances better to music she is familiar with.
Will Kisaya stay and socialize after the performance?
To preserve the mystery, most dancers will not stay at a party or event after the performance. Kisaya is happy to dance with the guests during audience participation, or may be booked for extended time to include a dance lesson as part of your event. For a Gypsy themed party Kisaya will include a brief discussion on the real Gypsies known as the Romani people. Typically Kisaya leaves after the performance unless other arrangements are made.
Why must I pay a non-refundable deposit for my event? Will I be required to pay a new deposit should the date or time of the event change?
The non-refundable deposit ensures that Kisaya will hold this date and time for your party or event. A cancellation would mean a loss of work, as Kisaya could not schedule another event during that time. Depending on how far in advance the changes are made, the deposit may be retained for the previous date as no other events could be scheduled during that time. To avoid paying a deposit for both dates, notify Kisaya of all date changes as much in advance as possible so Kisaya may open up the date for other events. Depending on the new date and time chosen, Kisaya may not be available due to conflicting scheduling. This is another reason to notify Kisaya of changes as soon as possible.
