American Tribal Style in Killeen – Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm at the Killeen Community Center
Other Classes – This page contains all my information on private lessons, semi-private lessons, and group classes outside of my regular studio events.
Coming to class and don’t know what to bring and wear? Here’s my recommended list for belly dance students:
- Bring a bottle of water! I can’t emphasize this enough! You will get hot and sweaty and need to rehydrate.
- Be prepared to dance barefoot or bring Hermes sandals, ballet slippers, or other soft soled dance shoes. Some dancers do prefer socks or nylon stalkings.
- Yoga pants, stretch leggings, jazz dance pants, and running pants are all common choices for dance wear. For American Tribal Style, I recommend big, baggy pantaloons if you have them. Otherwise, any of the other options will work. (For more suggestions on what to wear, check out this article on practice clothes for bellydance!)
- Wear a sports bra or yoga bra that offers adequate support. Many dancers find that regular bras just aren’t as comfortable for physical activity as a sports or yoga bra.
- Choli tops, leotards, and sports bras are all good tops to wear for dance class (if you’re daring enough to just wear a sports bra! Not everyone is), as they allow me to best check your posture during class. However, any shirt that is not too loose or baggy will do.
- A hip scarf, “jingle belt”, coin belt, or shawl, or tassel belt is useful to help isolate the hips and emphasize and define hip movements.
- For American Tribal Style only, I usually ask that students bring a long, flared skirt such as a tiered “gypsy” skirt, a “10 yard skirt”, a circle skirt, or flamenco skirt. While we do not focus on skirt work, American Tribal Style is known for these skirts, and it helps some dancers to be able to practice in them. There are many patterns available for sale at retailers, as well as free patterns online. There are also several retailers and dance supply stores that offer skirts that will work, both locally and online.
